Immigration remains on the radar. Currently, the shortage of skilled workers is playing a major role. In Austria, too, targeted attempts are being made to recruit skilled workers from abroad, but the procedure for residence and employment permits did not meet the changed requirements. Amendments to the Act on the Employment of Foreign Nationals (AuslBG) and the Settlement and Residence Act (NAG) as of 1 October 2022 are intended to remedy this situation. Ahead of schedule (the transposition deadline would have lapsed on November 18, 2023), the new law also implemented Directive (EU) 2021/1883 on the conditions of entry and residence of third-country nationals for the purposes of highly qualified employment and the repeal Directive 2009/50/EC (“EU Blue Card Directive”).
